Who needs to take the Life in the UK test?
The Life in the UK test is required for most ILR and British citizenship applications. You are exempt if you are aged 65 or over, or if you have a physical or mental condition that makes it impractical to take the test. Children under 18 do not need to take the test.
Does the certificate expire?
No. Once you have passed the Life in the UK test, your certificate does not expire. You can take it years before your ILR or citizenship application and it will still be valid. There is no benefit to waiting until close to your application date. Take it when you feel ready.
How hard is the test?
The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 18 correctly, or 75%, to pass. Most people who study properly using the official handbook pass first time. The questions cover UK history, values, laws, and institutions. Allow 4-8 weeks of regular study for most people.
What if I fail?
You can retake the test as many times as needed. Each sitting costs £50. There is no limit on the number of attempts. If you fail, you can book another sitting immediately. Most people pass within two or three attempts.
Where can I take the test?
The test is taken at approved test centres across the UK. You must book through the official website at officiallifeintheuk.com. Slots can fill up quickly in busy periods, so book early once you feel ready. The test takes 45 minutes.
