What is ILR?
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of settlement in the UK. It gives you the right to live and work in the UK without any immigration time limit. After holding ILR for 12 months, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship.
How long do I need to have lived in the UK?
Most visa routes require 5 continuous years of lawful residence. Some routes รขโฌโ including Innovator Founder and certain Global Talent endorsements รขโฌโ require only 3 years. The qualifying period starts from the date your first eligible visa was granted or your entry date, whichever is later.
What counts as continuous residence?
Continuous residence means you have not been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period during your qualifying period. Short trips abroad for holidays or business are permitted within this limit. A single long absence or frequent shorter absences that breach the 180-day rule can break your continuous residence.
Can I apply early?
You may submit your ILR application up to 28 days before your qualifying date. Applications submitted more than 28 days early will be refused and fees will not be refunded. Plan your application carefully and do not apply too soon.
What happens after ILR?
Once you hold ILR, you can live and work in the UK indefinitely. After 12 months with ILR, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. The citizenship application requires a separate process and fees.
