What can you do on a UK visitor visa?
A standard UK visitor visa allows you to attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations, carry out site visits, conduct academic activities such as examining and research collaboration, and since April 2024, undertake certain paid activities such as giving lectures at UK universities, providing legal advocacy, and performing or competing at events if paid by an overseas employer.
What is Permitted Paid Engagement?
Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) was a concession that allowed certain paid activities during short UK visits. It was abolished as a separate category in April 2024. The activities previously covered by PPE are now included within the standard visitor visa route, so visitors no longer need a separate PPE visa.
Can I work on a visitor visa?
No. A visitor visa does not allow you to take up employment, fill a vacancy, or do work for a UK employer. Certain paid activities are permitted, such as giving a lecture at a university or performing at an event, but only if you are not filling a role that could be filled by a UK worker, and only within strict conditions. If in doubt, seek advice before travelling.
Do I need an ETA to visit the UK?
From 2024, nationals of some countries that do not need a visitor visa are now required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK. The ETA is a digital permission linked to your passport. Check the current list of ETA-required nationalities on GOV.UK before booking.
